Private Sports Clubs whilst often charities also need to function as businesses and make ends meet and some professional sports clubs represent the highest levels of sport. Their survival depends on many things be they bowling, cricket, tennis, football, rugby or multi-sport.
Over nearly three decades in sports turf consultancy we have observed that the key asset the club has is its ground and pitches. I have seen clubs function out of little more than wooden sheds and thrive with volunteers who are dedicated selflessly to the task of supporting and developing young or older talent (Noel MacKenzie is a semi-professional swimming coach in his spare time) whatever buildings are present. However, without reliable sports facilities and playing surfaces the best clubhouse in the world will not ensure a club’s survival therefore we encourage working toward providing safe, reliable and, where necessary, economically produced surfaces.
